When you hire a travel writer, you want someone who combines research skills, location expertise, and the ability to inspire in words.
I have experience in writing features about UK and European travel, with related interests in running, walking and food.
I’ve written about travel both editorial and commercially for national newspapers, so I’m comfortable with deadlines. I also recognise that travel writing is research-heavy work.
Travel writing: my areas of expertise
My areas of experience and interest include:
European travel
I’ve written travel advertorials for the Telegraph and the Guardian, covering destinations as diverse as Estoril (Portugal), Asturias (Spain), Flanders (Belgium), Austria and the UK.
This means I’m able to provide commercial travel copywriting including blogs, brochures and more, for tourist boards and travel brands.
Cyprus and Greece
I’ve travelled extensively in Greece – not just to the islands – and written features for the Guardian about Greek travel, plus an entire Telegraph advertorial supplement about the Dodecanese.
I have a Greek Cypriot background (on one side) and lived in Cyprus for three years.
Special interest travel features
For a time I wrote about travel for customer magazines of brands, including Mazda, Brussels Airlines, easyJet and more.
I would focus on finding an interesting topic for a round-up, such as festivals, after-hours nightlife, eccentric buildings, and so on.
Travel podcasting
I presented sponsored travel podcasts for the Guardian from a range of destinations such as Greece, Germany and France.
I learned that travel podcasting involves serious legwork – with 18-hour days not unusual – but had a lot of fun learning to do it. And I also presented podcasts on languages for business.
Train travel
I’m one of those people who prefers to spend 15 hours on a train ride to the Basque country rather than fly to Malaga for a week of sweating on the beach.
I’ve travelled from the UK by train to Scandinavia, northern Spain (twice) and Istanbul, and have written travel advertorials about train journeys for the Telegraph.
I particularly enjoyed interviewing (and being persuaded by) the Man in Seat 61, whose website I still rely on for European travel dreams.
Running and outdoor activities
Running is a passion of mine: I recently ran a marathon in under 3 hours, and have taken part in trail ultramarathons. I’m available for travel features involving running, hiking and outdoor life.
Foodie travel writing
Food and drink are such an important part of travel: there’s nothing more fun than discovering a new food culture and translating menu items as you go.
I’ve written travel advertorials on the gastronomy of Belgium and Spain, have deep knowledge of the foods of Greece, and have even written about whisky for the Glasgow Herald.
