Non-fiction book editing is a specialist skill. A freelance book editor needs to be not only a meticulous copy-editor, but a self-starter who can steer a project from concept to publication.
Working as a freelance for the Guardian’s books imprint, I learned these skills and more – acting as both writer and editor for a series of books under the MediaGuardian brand.
So if you have a book-length editing project you need help with, please get in touch to discuss how we can work together.
Non-fiction book editing: my experience
MediaGuardian books
Between 2004 and 2006, I wrote and edited a number of books for the Guardian about how to get into the media industry.
These included:
The MediaGuardian Media Directory (2004–06)
For three years I acted as freelance book editor for this directory of media contacts. The work included:
- Copy-editing on-page directory data
- Copy-editing the index
- Writing and editing chapter introductions, in consultation with Guardian journalists, to round up the year in media.

Spin-off careers guides
I wrote and edited two MediaGuardian books on how to get into the media industry: one on print journalism, the other on broadcasting. The second of these, On Air, managed to gain five-star reviews on Amazon (admittedly, from its two reviewers).
Other projects
Using the skills I learned as a journalist and editor, I also self-published a handful of ebooks and print-on-demand titles, including a bitesize travel guide about Cyprus.
I handled the book editing and publishing process myself, using tools available online.
