Copy-editing

Bring clarity to your content by hiring an expert freelance copy-editor

Copy-editing brings clarity to content, whether you’re a marketer, an agency owner or a publisher.

So if the draft on your desk is ambiguous, shapeless or hard to understand, give me a call.

I’m a freelance copy-editor who can cut through the verbal clutter – and bring the focus your documents need.

Copy-editing: my experience

My roots as an editor go deep. I was editing copy for a peer-reviewed medical journal as long ago as the 1990s, and sub-editing for a national newspaper website in the early 2000s.

My first permanent job was on a newspaper for doctors, where A3 pages were printed out and corrected using proofreading marks.

I’ve never lost the knack of spotting errors and rewriting copy for grammar and style.

More recently, I’ve edited copy for content agencies, businesses, charities and professional services firms.

The value of an editor’s touch

In 2021, I wrote a blog post explaining why I think copy-editing is a valuable service. It’s a blog worth reading, because it remains true today.

In that blog I give seven reasons why copy-editing counts, and the big takeaway is that copy-editing is about more than just spelling and grammar (though it includes that, of course).

It’s also about helping make sure your numbers are consistent, that your copy is engaging, and that your reader can follow your line of thought.

Good copy even has an impact on good design, because edited copy looks better on the page. Paragraph length, sentence length and punctuation choice all play a part in that.

For these reasons, I’d say there is value in having an editor look over your copy even when you think it’s good to go. An experienced copy-editor almost always finds something to improve.

Copy-editing can also be cost-effective, as it was when I edited a white paper for the MBS Group.

When you’ve written a first draft of your white paper, copy-editing can be a cost-effective next step. Here’s how I helped The MBS Group.

Copy-editing: how I help

As an experienced freelance copy-editor, I help you to:

  • Focus your copy on the needs of the people who matter most: the clients or readers
  • Revise copy that’s written in the wrong tone for your brand or story
  • Restructure copy to tease out the important threads of your argument. This helps you know which sections to delete, which to expand and which to rewrite.

I’ve edited copy about technology, medicine, sustainability, compliance and similarly technical themes – and I enjoy bringing simplicity and clarity to the densest of content.

If you have a document or website in need of an edit, please get in touch.

I can provide quotes for both short-form and long-form editing, including both commercial and editorial copy.

I’ll bring a fresh look to your copy – and have it back on your desk sooner than you might think.
